A Modern way of experiencing museums

I had the privilege of working with the Philadelphia Consortium Museum on creating a virtual experience for all their museums. It was a complex, multidisciplinary project, with the individual museums acting as clients. The purpose of the project was to be culturally relevant with respect to modern-day technology.

THE GOAL

The problem area was that the museum needed an online virtual platform to host events and showcase some of their offerings online. The museum also wanted to have a subscription service called 'Art Pass', that would allow users to exclusively access certain events

Students from various fields were split into different teams, with me co-leading the virtual home (design and development) team. Our goal was to create an online digital world and to decide on a platform that would be easily accessible and allow for online events while also providing us with the freedom to design it however we wanted. Hence, we picked Spatial.IO as our online platform. Each team was assigned specific goals to achieve.

Ideation and Inspiration

Spatial.IO would allow us to host private events within the hub world that would be accessible to premium members of the museum. The hub would also host the historical and art pieces the museums would like displayed.

Once we finalized the platform the next important bit was to decide on the presentation of the art pieces and the overall "hub" area. We created Miro boards for ideation.

Considerations for "Virtual Home"

  • Streaming / Live Content

  • Web-based or Website Integration

  • Possibility of incorporating "Art to Find"

  • Announcements / Exhibitions

  • Archives

Design Key Words

  • Minimalist

  • Low-Poly

  • Pops of Color

  • Avatars

  • Contemporary

  • Negative Space

Questions for Virtual Home

  • How can the space be designed in a way to accommodate those with hearing impairments? (UX)

  • Can we create a virtual collection for "Art to Find?" What does that look like? (Art)

To start I proposed that we should make a list of keywords, questions, and what features to consider. Keywords helped us to explore art styles that would work and what sort of design we would like to implement. Questions were used to ask ourselves how might we implement certain features. Considerations were for the possible features to add and how best to do it.

Considerations were for the possible features to add and how best to do it.

Spatial.IO allowed the development process to be easy as we just needed to place images in the way we wanted to present them. Each museum gets a platform for users to explore and learn about.

END RESULT

The teams involved had successfully developed an online platform that was accepted by the museum. I on the behalf of the design and engineering team presented the design and it was something greatly appreciated. The team added 2 locations one that acts as a Hub for all the small museums consisting of the Philadelphia Consortium Museum as well as a separate stage environment where it will be possible to host live events.

This project was the first time I worked in a multi disciplined, cross collaborating environment and the results. It was a liberating experience that let me mix my design principles with the love of gaming that I have.
